Allen & Overy (A&O) global financial institutions head Alistair Asher is joining the Co-op as its new group general counsel as the troubled mutual sets out a £1.5bn rescue plan for its banking arm.Asher, who has spent more than 34 years at A&O, including 26 as a partner, led on the Co-op's merger with Britannia Building Society in 2009, as well as Lloyds' rescue takeover of HBOS in 2008.

CMS has appointed a new executive director to lead the network's executive committee alongside executive chairman Cornelius Brandi. Matthias Lichtblau, who is currently the business development and communications director at CMS Germany, will take over from Matthew Gorman, who has held the position since 2011. Lichtblau, who was appointed after a governance review, will take responsibility for business development, market communications, technology and skills training among the ten member firms.

DLA Piper has sold off the remainder of its defendant insurance team after Mills & Reeve struck a deal to take the nine-strong Birmingham-based practice. The team, which is made up of partner Alan Jacobs, associate Felicity Ho, solicitor Jagjit Virdi, plus three other fee-earners and support staff, will make the move to Mills & Reeve's Colmore Row office on 1 July.

Hogan Lovells and Eversheds are among the firms that have landed key roles on an acquisition that has seen buyout house Phoenix Equity partners buy a majority stake in a low-cost gym operator.Phoenix, which also owns stakes in restaurant chain Busaba Eatthai and fashion retailer Radley, bought the stake in The Gym group from Bridges Ventures, for a reported value of £90m. Bridges has retained a 25% stake in the company.

Osborne Clarke has posted a 14% hike in revenues to £112m for 2012-13 following a year of investment in its international network. After registering income of £98m in 2011-12, the firm added £14m of revenue over the course of a year in which it opened a new office in Hamburg in October and in July created an international network across Italy and Spain. However, like-for-like comparisons show revenues at the firm fell slightly from £98m to £97m, while provisional figures reflect a fall in profit of 5% to £35m from £37m.

Allen & Overy (A&O) has taken the headline advisory role on the Co-operative Group's £1.5bn debt restructuring rescue deal for its banking arm, ahead of a listing on the London Stock Exchange.The group today (17 June) announced a plan for its bondholders to help recapitalise The Co-op Bank, putting forward a deal which will see the group's junior securities holders offered shares in the bank.

King & Wood Mallesons has appointed two new practice heads in Australia following the departure of two of its senior partners last month. Under the leadership of Rick Ward, the Emirates Group's legal department has been restructured into three divisions to align lawyers more closely with the group's core activities. This has helped the department respond to an exceptionally busy year that has included the delivery of more than 30 wide-bodied aircraft and Emirates' alliance with Qantas. "They had remarkable projects and met unprecedented targets,” said the judges. The legal team comprises 11 lawyers, five legal managers and four support staff, and has undergone considerable expansion since the beginning of 2012, reflecting the growth of the Emirates Group's business activities across the globe. Following the reorganisation, three teams of lawyers now cover Emirates and group services, air travel services provider Dnata and its associated companies, and aircraft financing/corporate finance. The group's lawyers are also allocated specific legal responsibilities including sanctions, data protection and competition law.
