Government Legal Service - Looking for information

I'm curious about what it's like to work for the GLS, specifically their DEFRA branch. What do they look for in candidates? What is it actually like to deal with politically-minded clients? Is the bureaucracy as terrible as some people say it is? Can you actually have a career there, or does it make you give up on life?

Any experiences, anecdotes, stories, jokes and other would be appreciated
