Smile Advice wanted - application requirements for TC's

Looking for some advice - re. entry requirements for training contracts. I have applied to do a GDL but worried about making an expensive mistake, should I fail to secure a TC, which I think could be hindered by degree and A ***** requirements. I have a 2:1 Hons with a uni prize from Sheffield Uni but its in a non-traditional subject (BSc Information Management) and a Masters from Manchester University (MSc Marketing) again a non-traditional subject. My A *****s are A,B,C in English, Politics and History. Could anyone advise on whether this will hinder me later? I am 26 and have already worked for a couple of years and in doing so I think I would like to apply to bigger rather than smaller firms as have previously prefered these for various reasons - however, Im aware that I might not get past the application stage for big firms when competing with others who have higher A *****s and 2:1's in traditional subjects.

Thanks for your help.

I think you should be ok. Having the extra work and life exp will work in your favour. Just make sure that you target firms that are receptive to the value mature candidate bring to the table, and don't be disheartened if you get rejections. You will still have to demonstrate the competancies that other applicants do (ie team working, commercial experience, etc) but i shouldn't worry too much.

I'd also be ready to explain your career change. Particually as you did a master in a subject not really to do with law. I'm not saying this is a hinderence - just be ready to answer the question

You have a 2:1 which is half the battle, you should be ok if you get plenty of legal work experience.

Thanks all of you for the comments, much appreciated. Manchestergdl - do you have any thoughts as to what firms are receptive to mature candidates? Hadnt really thought of myself as being viewed like that, as have only had two years out of uni but I guess I will be - does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Was thinking on the GDL, most people will be minimum 21 and perhaps with gap years and other studying etc thrown in I wouldnt be too old...wishful thinking?!

Also am I right in thinking that I will be amongst the majority, rather than the minority in not having a TC when I start the GDL?

Final question (sorry), I gather from various discussion forums that I can apply for TC's whilst doing the GDL or the LPC? However, when Ive looked on firms websites they seem to suggest you apply either before doing either GDL or LPC or on completion of both? Im confused! If I complete the GDL and manage to get a TC would they still sponsor the LPC?

You think 26 is mature??!

There's no hope then, I only have 6 months left until I?m a "mature" candidate!

Don't think it's mature at all and I would also hope not! But think it was being suggested that I would be seen as 'mature' by some firms - I think this would probably apply to the city firms as I've seen comments on this in other places.

Many people on the GLD and even the LPC don't have a TC yet, so your not the only one.

Most major law firms offer to pay GDL/LPC fees, provided you applied and got an offer before starting the course. Most don't pay retrospectively. So if you have already started your GDL without a TC, but then get one before commencing the LPC, they will pay those fees. Remember the firms that offer sponsorship may want you to do your LPC at particular providers, i.e. BPP, CoL, etc. So enquire beforehand.
