Patent Paralegal

General Description

The individual in this position reports to the Manager of IP Administration. The individual is responsible for assisting the Manager in maintaining the patent and trademark docket systems. The individual is also responsible for maintenance of patent and trademark records.

Minimum Knowledge and Skills Required:

This position requires strong skills in the administration of patent and trademark databases. High school diploma required college degree preferred. A minimum of 2-3 years of docketing experience is preferred. Experience with CPI is preferable. Attention to detail and respect for confidentiality requirements are critical. Must have working knowledge of USPTO filing, prosecution, etc., and familiarity with correspondence from foreign associates, etc., such as to be able to identify deadlines, accurately docket. Must interact with individuals in the intellectual property group as well as outside law firms and the annuity service.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Maintain and update CPI database of all records for U.S. and international patents, patent applications, invention disclosures, and trademarks.
2. Intake and analyze electronic and traditional correspondence from global patent offices and external counsel for deadlines and other information: monitor electronic email folders, download correspondence into appropriate electronic folders.
3. Create and maintain electronic versions of communications, assist in ongoing audit of electronic files.
4. Assist with routine document review when needed (e.g., check official filing receipts for patent filings).
5. Assist with patent renewal and maintenance annuities, follow up on loose ends, coordinate with outside firms/agents when necessary.
6. Assist in maintenance of patent and trademark case files.
7. Archive files as needed.
8. Assist with projects as required.

1. Docket information is entered correctly, consistently, and timely.
2. Electronic files maintained and organized correctly, consistently, and timely.
3. Attend professional courses, seminars and meetings as deemed appropriate to maintain currency in pertinent procedures and systems.
4. Professional handling of confidential information.
5. Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to maintain high work standards, required.
6. Interest and initiative in improving upon data entry and document management procedures where appropriate.
